Oatmeal. It’s what’s for Breakfast!

[ 6 ] October 4, 2010 |

I might be slightly obsessed with oatmeal. Ok, yea, I am! It’s so wonderful and versatile though. After chowing down on a big bowl, I decided it was time to share some of my favorite mix-ins.

First, however, I want to mention the oats! I used to eat the quick cooking oats, but decided to try different types not that long ago and I am super glad I did. If you are in a hurry, you could still get the regular old-fashioned oats. They really don’t take much longer than the quick cooking oats, but they have much more texture. If you like a mushier oatmeal, sticking with quick cooking is your best bet.

One more quick note before I get into it: I never, ever, ever use water to cook my oatmeal. Once upon a time I did and it was terrible. I always use milk (normally almond milk or vanilla soy milk) because it’s creamier and adds more flavor. If you normally use water, try using milk and see if you like it! It’s totally different and the creamyness is awesome.

Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal

This is so perfect! All I do for this tasty oatmeal is slice up my apple and toss it in with my oatmeal while it’s cooking. If you want your apples crunchier, you can add them in about half way through the cook time or even after they are done. You can just stir them in while your oatmeal sits and they will get nice and warm. I add a dash or two of cinnamon because I love the two together! It still needs a tad of sweetness so I will also toss in a packet of equal.

Banana Oatmeal

I love all of these so much, not sure which I could even call my favorite! For this banana variety, I just cook my oatmeal like normal and then stir in some slices banana while it’s sitting. I just slice it with my spoon right into my bowl. Mix it up and let it sit a few moments so that the bananas get all warm and yummy. For this oatmeal, I never add anything else. It’s sweet enough as is, for sure.

Trail Mix Oatmeal

When I want a more filling bowl of oatmeal, I just toss in a big handful of trail mix when my my oatmeal is done cooking. I have this awesome trailmix, but it has yogurt covered raisens. Blech! I hate them. However, I have found that mixing them into my oatmeal is the best thing ever! The yogurt melts off and sweetens my oatmeal up perfectly and leaves me just the nice little raisens. It’s awesome and more filling than any other oatmeal (except maybe the pumpkin!).

Pumpkin Oatmeal

This is the perfect fall oatmeal!! I am a pumpkin-aholic so it’s really no surprise this is thrown into the mix. If you love pumpkin like me, I’d suggest adding about a half cup of pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie mix, in my opinion… it’s too sweet) to a half cup of oatmeal. It makes a LARGE serving though, which I have never been able to finish in one sitting! It gives me a nice snack for later though, so I don’t mind! If you aren’t a huge pumpkin fan, you can either add much less pumpkin or just try adding some pumpkin pie spice. It’s delicious! I normally toss in a dash of cinnamon and a little sugar with this one.

Super Syrup Oatmeal

Syrup is a totally awesome addition to oatmeal. Just drizzle a litlle bit on when you sit down ready to eat your oatmeal. Simple and delicious! I use Mrs. Butterworth’s Sugar Free syrup, just in case anyone was curious!

Just Right Oatmeal

I don’t know why, but I always think of that story about the three bears when I eat oatmeal. You know, how there was a mom bear, dad bear and baby bear and the little girl came into their house. She sat in their chairs and ate their porrige and whatnot. So my just right oatmeal is from that – because the baby bears stuff was always juuuuust right! Basically this is my normal oatmeal which just includes vanilla soy milk (for added flavor, yum!) and 2 packets of equal.

Baked Oatmeal

I make a recipe post over on Cocktails with Mom every Tuesday and a while back, I posted my Baked Oatmeal. It’s very good and perfect if you are serving more people. You could easily change up the ingredients (such as the things I mentioned above!) so don’t be afraid to give it a try!

Just remember, anything goes! Add dried fruit, brown sugar, nuts, chocolate chips… seriously, the possibilities are endless. Oatmeal is totally awesome because you can make it different every single day, it’ll never get old.

Hahah! I love pumpkin in EVERYTHING. Seriously, I even make a sort of pumpkin latte the other day! I go a little overboard sometimes… :)

Nice post, Mrs. Reidy! Have you tried any savory toppings? Mushrooms and soy sauce taste good with the earthy maltiness from the oats. My Dad used to mix in other cereals like wheat (cream or bran) or rye. I personally like the chewiness of steel cut oats with milk and and a touch of honey. I like almost any variety of oats and I will def try pumpkin! I don’t like haggis though.

I’ve actually never thought of trying savory toppings… I will have to test that out sometime! My favorite is still bananas and almond butter (or peanut butter or hazelnut butter or cashew butter… you get the idea!). It’s just SO filling, I normally have trouble finishing a bowl! I actually also love Cream of Wheat, which is great with some agave. Good idea about adding something savory, can’t wait to try it :)
